Home Visits

  • Housebound patients who need medical attention should contact the surgery before 10am where possible (except in urgent circumstances).
  • Housebound patients, their relatives or carers can contact our reception team, Tel. 01706 852238 and a GP call back will be requested to discuss the medical problem. The GP will then arrange appropriate assessment and treatment. Home visits will be made where necessary at the discretion of the doctors based on clinical need. Advice by a doctor can be given over the telephone in some circumstances.
  • Evidence suggests that patients who are seen outside of the surgery setting are assessed in sub-optimal conditions without full access to medical records, proper lighting, equipment and trained medical assistance.  Assessments away from the surgery environment are not ideal and have the potential to lack safeguards for confidentiality and dignity, increase the risk of missing serious conditions which can result in negative outcomes. Wherever possible patients are expected to attend the surgery for assessments. We have a wheelchair available at the surgery and one of our team can use this to help patients from a car or taxi up the ramp into the building - please let the reception staff know if this would be useful to you.
  • Requests for home visits should only be made when a patient is medically unfit to attend the surgery. In general, if a patient is able to get in and out of a car, we would expect them to attend a surgery based appointment, except in cases of terminal care. Lack of transport alone is not an appropriate reason to request a home visit.
  • It is expected that all children needing medical assessment are brought to the surgery, except in very exceptional circumstances such as terminal care.
